are we doing this morning all right good morning my name is Kevin main on the Heather's pool here at Hilltop with the first call welcome more than 50 years Hilltop has been at the Forefront you're moving more about diversity just a few moment but essentially need to have the Forefront of educating children and young adults who have learning disabilities ADHD take me to function challenges and autism and we have been the leader on the mainline and today you are a little bit more about how we're extending our you beyond our beautiful campus this idea of the Nerds versiti Success Center was born out of the last couple years to our strategic planning process that we underwent and we're very very excited to talk about this more about it and share it all with you I'll give you the number of folks here who are available after which is like to talk individually if you yourself know someone or yourself either for a child or young adult that may be a need of the center get us started it's my pleasure to introduce Joe riddle who's the director of your adversity for a national nonprofit that pencil companies on how to put into practice their diversity and so three miss work we've learned a ton as to what's needed in the face to support her are diverging people in employment in life in your understanding what the next steps of society might be right ever seen so much benefit come out of places like Hilltop the honors beyond the support here and seeing the community come together surrounding the need for students hey baby just a little bit have a very filling and in promising career future ahead of them and so when we got together a couple years ago we identified that okay schools academic have been really impressive the idea of you working specifically as Kevin mentioned with people with ADHD autism Alexia Etc this idea of neurodiversity and I like to define the word neurodiversity as thinking and learning how we all think learn and socialize and different ways this thing how much does the title or the word nerd ever right and so people who are married a virgin experience different ways of thinking learning and socializing typically seen as neurotypical says is the standard version is outside right and what we see is that often times our systems are not quite adapted for accepting of people who fall outside of that system and I feel really great in Preparing People For What next we see the the faculty and staff here really helping to shape the culture and support for their division student in between Pizza desotopsb Curry Raymond Keith has kept the pieces that academics alone don't cover and so we were really excited to see this kind of come together because when we have the extra pieces just another weapon that we can argue with to go into the future in jail with more preparation and more ability I always like to throw out that in working we work with a lot hire people we always we see that people are heavily prepared armed with this kind of understanding of the social dynamics that come in employment which is really really important and so we want to stand it Whip and Nae Nae really excited to be here really excited to see this, whether it's been a long time planning on coming to me I've done a ton of work in shaping this and so take me to Houston to be able to propel people in the future better stuff . I have over 20 years of education experience the majority of my professional career has been an education for the last 24 years I have done so many different things from owning and operating DSL School in Greece spending the majority of my years as a classroom teacher all in Special Ed I'm going to my fourth year here at Hilltop I think it's fair to say that most of us know as you need to help me learn differently through the NFD we hope to expand on the special work that way do they reaching out beyond the classroom into well thank true to Hilltop mansion NST programming will be available to people adult while we will be offering executive function coaching as well as College advising today I want to focus more on the gear program important skills needed to build there are Social Challenges chair the importance of having friends we all know having someone at by your side is we can support you bring the skill of making and keeping fresh having friends is important factor in personal happiness Bianca said weather at the middle school student trying to find common interests with those around them a team trying to fit in for an Advil and finding their place in the world someone to relate to is crucial. here's the program for the enrichment of relational skills evidence-based program and it was developed through it was derived in part by studying the development of socially successful children and through that research they develop and have altered over the years if you see a doctor for Lucky's as they called to make the Investments as yours that no, I will go to war and what the program at Hilltop we are going to currently be able to offer adolescent here's a young and adulterers running in separate sections coming soon will also be able to offer peers for careers. in the Adolescent Treatment session these are the 13 didacticas they call them or the lessons the lessons reflects a core set of social skills that carry on throughout our lives for example children introduced to play Maltese adult center groups in the concert so we can speak with our team Bruce Lee trading information getting to know each other how to have a conversation getting together sportsmanship bullying isak relationships gossip a graduation party similar as a young adult session in changes a little bit in that we might talk about dating skills how to handle dating pressure there is room to individualize an adapter topic what to expect for a for a group of participants should expect to learn communication skills to make the better understand how to navigate social situations like entering or exiting a conversation weather in a small group or in a large older participants another important skills that might be game and how to handle game a challenge for so many to be successful a not a whole lot to be successful the individual's needs to be motivated motivated motivated learn the skills it's important that peers participant engage in every 14 are mandatory it's not if you're motivated there is a homework assignment the homework is part of the essential piece of ended and that when the counselors go over the weeks with you how did the homework go practice go how did entering a conversation work in real time I need a little bit more. Another parents come to their own separate group at the same time as their students for their young adults learning the skills hoping to enforce coach and guide in the piers model is different in that it's not as strict as mine which it's not we're teaching a lesson games that there's a lot of conversation between the instructor and the members why is it important getting their feedback on it there's a bowling place there's video there's showing appropriate and post it didn't go too well why not there's practice with there is game there is some homework and the homework is taking the truth killed into your community like I mentioned the parent or Guardian pieces is super super important the parent or Guardian each which has their own class or their own session where you will receive the weekly you will go over the homework as to what your student or is your what you saw them do successfully what they need more support on while we are teacher individual Baconfest support and guide their student forward well hopefully with the end goal of independent but you're there you're not telling me what to do and how to do it before enrolling in here we have to see if it's a good fit for you and your family there will be we're all go over the expectations and determine if it is a good fit for you it is important he's at the participant have the auditory processing and verbal skills to take part in the sessions there is a lot of communications there's a lot of that is we also want to limit students that might have behaviors that would interfere with how not to forget if we don't all plan and manage our Days Inn initiating tasks specially those not for managing time staying focused and could become an overwhelming frustrating scary often thinking about the classroom these students are the ones who are labeled as lazy we will work closely with again on the help them gain insight and put together with the College advising currently our College advisor meeting Leslie is here on campus in our library working with this week we're so lucky Del operador current students she works closely with the students always keeping him in the center of the cross she knows which schools which program might be a good fit are you once you tell her a little bit about yourself or your student she knows I'll walk you through the process from the very beginning to your essay through the application acceptance making a good final choice and we are too and on that note will beer
