Hill Top graduate Ted Merriman '99 wanted to send a special message to the Class of 2020 whose senior year and graduation was cut short by the pandemic. So, he enlisted Booth School graduate and Star Trek actor John de Lancie to share his message with our recent graduates.

greetings John de Lancie here well we all have something in common Ted who I don't know who was pres from the class of 1999 who went to the hill top preparatory school has a me to send you a greeting because guess what you got to miss your graduation and I'm really sorry about that now I happen to have gone not to Hilltop but to what was then called The Booth School so I know and I know those grounds very very well and while I come to Philadelphia the very infrequently I always drive up there the the driveway and then I take a look at the school it comes I have a out of memories about that school there were 19 of us in the graduating class we had a football team of 12 and the first year we had the football team we lost all the games but that was cuz we played offense and defense the second year or our coach said to the big school so you Haverford an Episcopal that you had to only filled 15 kids and that we won all of our games except one so that was pretty nice I have great memories about mr. Bissell who was the assistant principal a crazy come into the classroom and say okay it's this is going to be here soon and we're all going to learn Handel's Messiah we had no idea what he was talking about in the springtime I was 14 years old and he threw a book at me which you can't do any or a big book at me all the way across the room and hit me smack in the chat then he said that at the end 2 months from now we're going to do Henry the 5th and Delancey you're going to play how and that was the beginning king of my becoming an actor I'm now 72 years old and I've been an actor since I was 14 all there by the time I graduated from the booth I had to performed how much does a senior Romeo and Juliet the year before and the year before that I think it was I think we were doing we did that in any case I have many fond memories I'm still in touch with my first girlfriend Betsy from Booth so it gives me a lot of pleasure to be able to be speaking to you kind of I'm really sorry that I missed your graduation I'm really sorry about that and as matter fact I was asked to write a speech to the secular students of America and to write a graduation speech for them if you're not secular you might listen to it because it's a discussion about the responsibility that we might generation has to you your generation I think you'd be happy to hear it math listen the best you can do is to remain optimistic we need you we need you desperately you are taking over the world not of our days our way this is your time use it well cheers
