LGBTQ History Month
LGBTQ History Month is an annual observance that takes place in October. This month is used as a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of LGBTQ people. It is also used as a time to raise awareness of the ongoing struggles and discrimination that they face. LGBTQ History month was first observed in October 1994, founded by a Missouri High School teacher named Rodney Wilson. Wilson believed that it was important to recognize and celebrate the history and successes while also raising awareness to the struggles and challenges that LGBTQ people face. It was picked to be in October to surround National Coming Out Day, which is annually celebrated on the 11th. In honor of this, SAGA has decided to put educational posters of different queer and trans icons. Some people you may know such as Freddie Mercury or Elliot Page. While others may seem not as familiar. If you have any questions about LGBTQ History Month or the posters, feel free to reach out to either Mrs. Fox or Rae N.

American Library Association's Banned Books Week
This week is the American Library Association's Banned Books Week. A time to celebrate the fact that in this country, your reading choices should be limited only by your own parents. Mrs. Gillespie will highlight some frequently challenged books this week on Instagram (@mrsgillespie).
Today's book is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Alexie Sherman. This tells the story of a native boy who leaves the reservation to attend the school in town where the only other Indian is the school mascot. The kids at school treat him poorly because he's different. The kids at home on the reservation treat him poorly because they see him as a "traitor" for leaving. This book has been challenged for years based on the fact that it's got some "foul language" in it.

This Weeks College Rep Visits
There are four colleges visiting this week: Albright College (PA), Stetson University (FL), Lehigh University (PA), and Delaware Valley University (PA).
