good morning Hilltop mr. Van Dyke here with your community meeting announcements for Wednesday April 22nd birthday but not just any birthday today we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day started back in nineteen play the first Earth Day sell 20 million people many of them students come together all over the country to raise awareness of the damage we were doing to our planet we've come a long way since then and today over a billion people around the world participate in Earth Day every April 22nd as a result of what they start and we continued our oceans rivers and lakes are cleaner as his are are this year's Focus birthday not surprisingly climate change so this week I came across a video that I found both interesting and educational and I thought I would share it with you here today so I hope you enjoy it hi my name is Jenny Mater and I'm the Archer for NASA science for many years I've been creating the Earth Day posters for NASA I try to focus on A New Perspective whether it's the 2017 total solar eclipse the Earth as a shore of the cosmic Ocean or discovering Our Roots in the dust of astrobiology I tend to illustrate our home our place in the universe in the unique advantage of NASA this year being the 50th anniversary of Earth Day I wanted to do something really special but first i'm going to talk about my inspiration last year I read a book about trees that really inspired me we see trees all around us everyday but I never imagined how much we have in common for instance if you hold a stethoscope to the trunk of a hardwood tree you can hear its heartbeat as water and nutrients move through the system and most astonishing as a relationship that trees have with funghi Trier is attached to funghi underground which not only allow them access to more water and nutrients but enable them to communicate with each other for miles and 2018 Swiss scientist discovered voltage base signals in these networks similar to our nerve these signals allow trees to send warnings drought disease or insect attacks neighbor in trees it's really quite amazing so this is all very inspiring but how could I related to NASA's unique perspective I was talking to a call one day and he said a river Delta looks a lot like a tree from space and that was a lie for me from there I started doing more research and found this great metaphor by James Hutton the father of modern geology he described Earth as a superorganism during the water cycle to the human circulatory system basically the heart pumping blood through our veins this brought a full circle for me a tree as a river Delta with the Earth metaphorical heart pumping water through its natural circulation system three metaphors in one composition so I wanted to do something really special since it's the 50th Anniversary I wanted to try something that I never done before to paint the Earth Day poster I've been a painter since I was and it's what led me to study Art and Design in college I begin by drawing to Delta tree on a 15 by 30 inch piece of watercolor paper I found a bunch of satellite images and started to paint mostly making up details I went along artwork made for an interesting illustration but for me something was missing the make it up as I go approach didn't quite capture the NASA aspect that I'd hoped for so I went back to the digital drawing board and started compositing the detail with Act real science data another first for me I mostly pulled imagery from the landsat series of missions which NASA operates in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey my main resource for the Delta was taken for my all time favorite artists are damaged the Lena Delta in Siberia but a variety of other images were also used in the composition from a desert in Southern California to the lakes of Western Mongolia at the very tip of South Erica imagery from all over the world as detailed to this composited illustration can you find these images along with the hidden animals in the River delta to download the 2020 Earth Day poster along with these activities and posters from past because it's science. Nasa.gov thanks for listening and remember that we are all part of the super organism that is hearth Central spending a little more time at home these days it's important to consider ways that we can make the best of the situation enjoy the little things luckily we can borrow an idea from our friends in Denmark who do to their long Winters have made hunkering down for long periods of time a bit art form pronounce hygge the Danish concept cannot be translated to a one single word that encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life if you've ever enjoyed reading a book doors on a rainy Sunday or a cup of hot cocoa on a snowy day you've experienced hygge without even knowing it so this week we asked Hilltop teachers to show us how they who got here are some examples okay it's birthday time the people have birthdays this week and we want to wish them all a Happy Birthday on the 20th of April it was Miss tuplex birthday tomorrow April 23rd is already Riker's birthday Patrick LeBron will celebrate his birthday on the 26th and on the 27 Miss minicozzi celebrates her birthday happy birthday to you all hey next up we have the thrill off the hill challenge update I continue to receive pictures of students out there walking and I am exercising in all sorts of ways in preparation for the thrill off the hill weekend on May 2nd so please keep those pictures coming and remember each time you send me a picture of you out there exercising your name gets placed in the drawing for gift cards so mrs. Gillespie wanted me to pass along to you as well that everybody to send me a picture will be receiving a Zombie Kitten or similar gift so if you need them no reason to get out there and walk or run now you have it thanks mrs.
